Acid Reflux Diets
There are few things a horrifyingly uncomfortable as acid reflux. A particularly bad bout can leave you gasping for your fiery breath and wondering if you should pay a visit to the emergency room. Many sufferers are convinced they're having a heart attack - although it's really stomach acid causing the agony. Acid reflux diets can help you make the best of the situation, though you might find you can no longer eat your favorite foods. What diet is best for sufferers of acid reflux?
Obviously, food and drink are the things that aggravate your condition, making your throat and chest burn and ache. All acid reflux diets hinge on eliminating these problem-causing elements. So, what foods can you safely consume? What drinks can you have without fear of the fire in your throat? Actually, the list will vary from person to person. However, you can usually have apples and bananas. You can also enjoy a baked potato (leave off the sour cream!), carrots, peas, green beans and cabbage. Broccoli is also fine.
Any form of lean ground beef should be fine on an acid reflux diet, as is chicken breast and fish. If you enjoy eggs, though, you'll need to do it without the yolks (they light the fire, too). Goat cheese is good, as is fat-free cream cheese and soy cheese. If you can't live without sour cream, opt for fat-free sour cream and see what happens (some people are fine while others aren't).
Standard white bread may be one of your worst enemies on an acid reflux diet. Opt for whole or multigrain breads and stick to bran cereals. Rice cakes area also good, though a bit bland and boring. Put down the coffee (even if it's decaf) and avoid orange juice, as well. Basically, a good acid reflux diet helps you cut out the food and drink you consume that contains high amounts of acid, as well as those with tons and tons of fat.
An acid reflux diet doesn't have to be boring, though. With a little creativity, you can spice it up (not hot spicy, though!) and enjoy yourself immensely. This might be the perfect time to try out some of those Mediterranean recipes you've been eyeing or to branch out into organic foods, as well. With a bit of thought and the right medication, you can beat acid reflux and enjoy a flavorful diet.
